Excerpts from the speech of Mr. R. McLean, Agent, GIP Railway

The New Nagpur Railway station building was opened on 15.1.1925 by His Excellency Sir Frank Sly, Governor of Central Provinces.  The construction was sanctioned in 1913 and suffered interruptions due to the War in 1914.  The area occupied was not more than 1500 yards x 330 yards (4500 ft x 990 ft) and cut in to two by the old public road over bridge.  A new goods yard at Ajni and new passenger yard at Nagpur with its local goods arrangement was made.  The work commenced in 1913 at an estimated cost of Rs.69.61 lakh and revised to Rs.106.94 lakh out of which the station building cost was about Rs.4.5 lakhs.

The building is designed by Mr. C.B. Reid, an Architect and re-design by Mr. Wilson who had much influence. All its materials are the production of the Central Provinces.  The stone was brought from the Borgaon and Patkhakheri quarries about 30 miles (48 km) away and all the timber from the forests near Chanda.  The style of the architecture is English classic admirably adapted to the headquarters of the Province.  The old Government Post office  near the station was secured as a waiting shed for the then 3rd class passengers.  The building itself has been extensively remodelled and as it stands now a floor area  of 7200 square ft.
